The tragedies

Are relived in a breathtaking setting turning into unforgettable experiences for the audience. Lovers of culture and art will be able to enjoy the magic of the stone theater and the emotions that classic shows offer.

The National Institute of Ancient Drama (INDA) has been reviving the tradition of classical shows at the Greek Theater of Syracuse since 1914 and has been promoting the foundations of Greco-Roman thought. Only the World Wars interrupted the journey of the prestigious Institute, which otherwise would never have stopped, even though the institutional structure changed over time: in 1998 the INDA was transformed from a public body into a Foundation that annually designs and organizes the cycles of shows classics at the Greek Theater of Syracuse. The activity carried out over a hundred years aims to enhance classical culture, favoring the birth of a cultural koiné capable of containing - under the sign of the Ancient Theater - different experiences and sensibilities.

ETNA

Etna, a real "Must to see" in Sicily. It represents a terrestrial natural scientific laboratory on volcanic areas and its intense activity has been observed and told since classical times. In fact, it has been written about it for about 2,700 years and this represents for Unesco "one of the most documented world records in the field of volcanoes".
"The craters, the ashes, the lava flows, the lava caves and the depression of the Valle del Bove, make Mount Etna a privileged destination and an important international research center with a long history of influence on volcanology, geology and other disciplines of earth science ”and“ its notoriety, its scientific importance, its cultural and pedagogical values are of global importance. ”These are the reasons that led Unesco to make the Sicilian volcano a world heritage.

PROGRAM

WITH ARRIVAL IN CATANIA

1st day. Arrival at Catania's Fontanarossa airport and welcome by one of our Alba Incoming collaborators who will accompany you to the Pacini Garden, which is the access to the ancient part of the city. Today's day sees you as the protagonists of an urban trekking through the streets of the historic center with its Roman Theater, dating back to the 2nd century AD, Piazza Duomo which houses the Cathedral of Sant'Agata (Patron Saint of Catania) and the peculiar Fountain of the Elephant. Also noteworthy is the lively and ancient city market called the Piscarìa (the Fish Market) where you will be pervaded by a flood of smells, colors and sounds. Short tour along Via Etnea, the city's main artery, full of shops and clubs but also historic buildings, pay particular attention to Piazza Stesicoro, it will amaze you with the peculiarity of the Roman Amphitheater.
Free time at your disposal. Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.

2nd day. Immersed in a natural landscape dotted with citrus plantations, today's main stop will be the largest volcano in Europe and still in activity: Etna. You will reach an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters, i.e. up to the Silvestri craters, it will be at your discretion whether to continue (optionally) up to 3,000 meters by cable car and jeep (approximately € 68.00 - per person). The afternoon, on the other hand, is dedicated to the discovery of Taormina also known as "the Pearl of the Mediterranean". There, visit the theater and walk through the medieval streets. Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.

3rd day. Day entirely dedicated to Syracuse. A visit to the "Neapolis" Archaeological Park is a must, a combination of both Greek and Roman history; the Ear of Dionysus, the Grotta dei Cordari and the Latomie del Paradiso are just some of the beauties kept inside. Also stop on the island of Ortigia which is the oldest side of Syracuse, in addition to representing the actual historic center, thanks to the presence of the Cathedral and the famous Arethusa Spring. The show to be held that day at the Theater is scheduled for late afternoon. This season, three of the flagships of the best tragedians of the Hellenistic age will take turns: Sophocles' Oedipus King, Aeschylus' Agamemnon and Euripides' Iphigenia in Tauris. Although these are stories in their own right, the common thread that binds them is the fatalism looming over its protagonists, the inevitability of a destiny that is now interwoven and that will be fulfilled in any case.

4th day. You will be free to use your time as you see fit: shopping in the many shops in Catania or maybe a little healthy relaxation in the hotel. However, we recommend taking advantage of the favorable climate for a swim in the sea or to take part in one of our excursions in the area (optional - on request). Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.

5th day. Depending on the time of departure, transfer to the airport and end of services.
